THe meaning behind the name and logo

Why It’s Called "Sirens"

People sometimes ask where the name *Sirens* came from.

On the surface, it sounds simple enough. Sirens are the sound of an emergency. Police lights cutting through the dark. Ambulances racing down an empty highway. The unmistakable signal that somewhere, something has gone terribly wrong.

In true crime, those sounds are often the beginning of the story. But the name was never meant to be that simple.

When I first began building the podcast, it was hosted by me and Holly Archer, two women. I started thinking about the word "sirens" in its older, mythological sense. In Greek mythology, sirens were known for their voices. Sailors who heard them couldn’t turn away. The sound pulled them closer, even when they knew danger was waiting.

That idea stuck with me.

Because true crime has the same pull. People listen knowing the stories will be heavy. They know the endings are often tragic. And still, they lean in. They listen anyway.

Two voices telling stories that draw listeners into the darker corners of real life. The name felt right. But it also had to mean something else.

A lot of the voices that appear on Sirens come from people who have lived these cases from the inside—first responders, investigators, officers, and professionals who work in the justice system every day. The red and blue lights in the show’s artwork represent that world. Police. Fire. EMS. The people who answer the call when something has already gone wrong.

Those lights are only one side of the story, though.

Behind the logo are black and white stripes. They’re subtle, but they’re intentional. They represent prison uniforms from another era. A reminder that crime stories don’t end when the sirens fade. They continue in courtrooms, prison cells, and the long aftermath that follows a tragedy.

Between those two worlds—the responders and the consequences—are the stories themselves.

And sitting above it all is a raven.

Ravens have always carried a certain weight in storytelling. They appear in folklore, in literature, in the quiet spaces where mystery and memory live. Anyone familiar with Edgar Allan Poe knows the image well. For me, the raven also carries another meaning. It’s my name. And all it stands for can sum me up pretty easily.

A small signature perched quietly on the edge of the story. Observing.

Over time, the podcast grew into something larger. The work expanded into books, investigations, and conversations that moved beyond a single show. That’s how The Sirens Network came to exist—an umbrella for the stories, research, and voices that come together under one name.

But the meaning of Sirens hasn’t changed. It’s still about the voices. The ones that tell the stories. And the ones that refuse to let them be forgotten.
